Parenting Coach, Counsellor or Therapist: Which Does Your Family Need?
In short: a parenting coach helps parents understand their child and change how they respond at home. A counsellor helps a child or family talk through a specific difficulty. A therapist, psychologist or psychiatrist assesses and treats mental health conditions. If there is any risk to your child's safety or health, start with a doctor or a qualified professional, not a coach.
What a parenting coach does
A parenting coach works with you, the parent. Together you look at what is happening at home, what your child may be telling you without words, and what you could try differently this week. It is practical and forward-looking. A good coach will not diagnose your child, and will tell you honestly when you need someone else.
That is how I work in ParentsCoach: I talk with parents only, never with children.
What a counsellor does
A school or family counsellor usually talks with the child, the family, or both, about a particular difficulty: exam pressure, friendships, a loss, a change at home. Many schools in India have a counsellor; it is often the easiest first step when the worry is mainly about school.
What a therapist, psychologist or psychiatrist does
These are trained clinicians. A clinical psychologist can assess and provide therapy. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose and prescribe. They are the right people for persistent sadness, anxiety that stops normal life, eating or sleeping problems, self-harm, or anything that worries you about your child's safety.
Which one does your family need?
| If this sounds like you | Start with |
|---|---|
| "We keep fighting about the same things and I don't know how to talk to my child." | A parenting coach |
| "My child is struggling with something specific at school or with friends." | A school or family counsellor |
| "My child seems very low, very anxious, has stopped eating or sleeping, or talks about hurting themselves." | A doctor, clinical psychologist or psychiatrist, today |
| "I'm not sure what is going on." | Your family doctor or a counsellor, and a coach for your own part |
These are not either-or. Many families see a professional for the child and work with a coach on how the parents respond at home.
Questions to ask before you choose anyone
- What is your training, and what do you not handle?
- Will you talk with my child, with us, or both?
- How do you keep what we share confidential?
- What will it cost, and how will we know it is helping?
A gentle note: I write as a parent and a coach, not a doctor or therapist. If your child talks about hurting themselves, stops eating or sleeping, or seems unsafe, please see a doctor or a qualified counsellor now. In India you can call Tele-MANAS, the free government mental health helpline, on 14416, any time.
Questions people ask
Is a parenting coach the same as a child psychologist?
No. A parenting coach works with parents on how they understand and respond to their child. A child psychologist is a trained clinician who can assess and treat a child's mental health.
Does a parenting coach talk to the child?
Some do. I do not: ParentsCoach is for parents only. I help you understand your child and respond well at home.
When should we see a doctor instead of a coach?
When there is any risk to your child's safety or health: talk of self-harm, very low mood that does not lift, stopping eating or sleeping, or behaviour that frightens you. In India, Tele-MANAS on 14416 is free and available any time.
